What To Expect: Week 13

July 31, 2009

Sorry this one's a little late, folks! My FINAL Studio project EVER was due this week, and made for a few stressful days. I'm very relieved to have that over with, and the prospect of never having to take another Studio class is thrilling!!!

Now that I've recovered from school, I can catch you all up with this week's stats. We're in week 13, which means I'm in my 2nd trimester (YAY!) Apparently the 2nd trimester is the easiest one, but I don't know how much easier things can get for me (knock on wood.) Regardless, I'm excited to hit this milestone! The baby is peach-size this week, and working on teeth and vocal cord formation. Also, the intestines are moving from the umbilical cord to being inside the baby's body. Um, ew?

Definitely not a peanut.....

July 20, 2009

I had my second OBGYN appointment this morning, and Aaron was able to come with me to hear the heartbeat for the first time. It was amazing, just thump-thump-thumping away! It's beating about 140 beats/minute, which was pretty fast. I still don't really feel pregnant, so it was nice to have a confirmation that things are going how they should be.
We also had another quickie ultrasound done. They don't normally do an ultrasound on this visit, but they were really nice and accomodated us since Aaron was with me (and their printer was broken the first time.) It is unreal how much the baby has grown! The first picture just looked like a tiny little blob, but this time we can see all kinds of details. Check it out!

What To Expect: Week 12

July 20, 2009

This week, we've got a plum-sized baby, which is a little funny because I've been eating a lot of plums lately. The baby weighs about half an ounce. I did a little research in the kitchen, and it turns out the average plum weighs about 4 oz. Last week's lime actually weighs around 4 oz., too, but the baby was only supposed to weigh a quarter of an ounce. So apparently these are size comparisons, but not weight comparisons. Regardless, it's growing A LOT!

What To Expect: Week 11

July 13, 2009

For some reason, this week's size comparison was really amazing to me - I mean, a LIME? That's huge! It seems like such a big jump from last week and that creepy prune. I even went to the fridge and grabbed a lime to feel what we're dealing with here. A lime is a pretty substantial size, so I feel like now this baby is getting somewhere! This week it's starting to get teeth, nails and hair. It will need hair to cover up all that head - right now it's a 1:1 ratio between head and body. The baby can also stretch, do somersaults and forward rolls. Not that I can feel any of it,but at least it's getting a workout. And apparently there's plenty of room for activity - right now, my uterus is supposed to be the size of a grapefruit. I don't know how big it is usually, but a grapefruit seems pretty damn big when you consider the fact that it's sitting inside your abdomen.

What To Expect: Week 10

July 6, 2009

First of all, couldn't they have found a cuter food item for comparing size this week? A prune? That's just creepy looking... Besides the creepy, shriveled-fruit-like size, the baby's bones are beginning to develop and vital organs are starting to function. Among these are the kidneys. That's right, ladies and gentlemen - the baby can now pee. It can also use its tiny little arms and fingers.

I've been pretty lucky with the lack of pregnancy symptoms, but I do think my stomach is getting a little bit bigger. On Wednesday, I had to use the old "rubber band around the button" trick while I was at work - my pants were fine while I was standing, but when I sat down, it felt like my waistband was doing permanent, irreparable damage to my internal organs. The pants I was wearing actually have a button and two metal hooks, so I had to get a bent paper clip in on the action. Very awkward and uncomfortable. So, looks like that's one pair of pants that will be on hiatus for awhile! Fortunately the 6 pairs of shorts I bought at Old Navy right before I found out I was pregnany still fit comfortably - I would be really mad if I was having to buy more new shorts right now!

Aaron is supposed to be blogging on here, but since that hasn't happened yet, I'll give you my personal update on the state of the Papa. He has been absolutely wonderful the whole time! I joked the other weekend that if I had known he would be this nice to me, I would have gotten pregnant YEARS ago! He definitely should be entered in the Supportive Husband Hall of Fame. He went to the store Monday to buy everything to make Shepherd's Pie just because I had seen it on TV and it looked yummy. He drove me to urgent care last Friday night when I got a UTI (no biggie, but it freaked me out and he automatically jumped into the driver's seat, literally and figuratively.) And he lets me use "But, I'm pregnant" as an excuse for everything! Best husband ever....
